'Routing issue' cause of T-Mobile data service problem

Outage comes amid a Congressman's claim of a DDoS attack

T-Mobile is contending with a widespread outage of voice and data service amid reports on social media of dropped calls and text messages that won't send.

There is no evidence that the outage, which was first reported by T-Mobile on Twitter Monday afternoon, is an attack, but Rep. Ted Lieu, a Democrat from California, said a denial of service attack, or DDoS, took place today.

"In light of this DDoS attack, your reminder that @realDonaldTrump eliminated the cybersecurity coordinator position at the NSC in 2018. And in 2019 at least a dozen high-level officials resigned from cybersecurity mission established under Obama," Lieu tweeted.

A DDoS attack is an attempt to disrupt an online service by flooding it with traffic. A spokesperson for Rep. Lieu said that he made the claim based on public information.

"His tweet was based on public reporting so unfortunately we don’t have additional info at this time," the spokesperson said.

However, T-Mobile has said nothing about a DDoS attack and their help page on Twitter is saying that it is a "routing issue."

Ray Neville, the president of technology at T-Mobile, tweeted at 4:18 p.m. ET that their network was having a "voice and data issue."

“Our engineers are working to resolve a voice and data issue that has been affecting customers around the country. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and hope to have this fixed shortly,” he tweeted.

T-Mobile was not immediately available for a request for comment.

Verizon said that its network was not hit by a DDoS attack today.

"Verizon has robust layers of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protections that we monitor 24 x 7 to protect our network and customers," a Verizon spokesperson told FOX Business. "We have seen no DDoS activity that would impact our networks today."

Verizon and AT&T both told FOX Business that there networks are operating normally and have not been down.
