AMD Shuffles Business Units, Names COO

Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD) said Thursday it plans to consolidate its business units into two segments, while Lisa Su was named the chip maker's chief operating officer.

Su, who joined AMD in 2012 as general manager of its global business units, will lead the corporate shuffling. She previously served in engineering and leadership roles over the course of 13 years at International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM).

“Lisa has been a driving force in AMD’s recent success, and as COO she will expand on this foundation and lead a broader organization designed to more quickly adapt to industry shifts, streamline execution and decision making, and create even greater value for our customers,” chief executive Rory Read said in a statement.

AMD will combine its client, consumer and professional graphics operations into a single computing and graphics segment. The division will be led by sales chief John Byrne, who will report directly to Su.

The company’s server and semi-custom businesses will comprise an enterprise, embedded and semi-custom group overseen by Su.

The new structure will be implemented on July 1.

AMD, which is working to overcome a decline in PC demand, said the moves are part of its multi-year restructuring. Last month, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company reported a smaller loss for the first quarter, as sales improved 28% on demand for graphics products.

Shares rose 1.1% to $4.34 in recent trading. AMD has climbed about 12.1% so far this year.
