Crunching the Numbers for Small Businesses
We’re highlighting small businesses from around the country as nominated by you, our readers. If your favorite small business is using Twitter to communicate with customers, let us know about it @fbsmallbiz with the hashtag #mysbc, and it may be featured as an upcoming Small Business of the Day.
Small Business of the Day: Small Business Accounting LLC.
Who: Jason Dillon, 30, @smallbizaccting
What: Accounting and tax services for small businesses and individuals
When: July 2010
How: Dillon, a CPA, had been doing some in-house accounting work when he posted an ad on Craigslist, offering his services to make some extra money. Slowly, clients began flocking to him, and it turned into a full-time job.
"I always wanted to be in public accounting, and had applied at several large firms but was never taken too seriously," Dillon said. "I always knew I could do this on my own."
Today he is working with nearly three dozen businesses, and will have completed close to 250 returns for this tax season, along with his two employees.
Where: Birmingham, Ala.
Biggest lesson he has learned from a customer: "I haven't been afraid to tell someone what is good for them, even if it's at the expense of losing their business," Dillon said. "People really see I am genuine, and that I want to see them succeed. Maybe I won't get their business that way, but it has paid off for me."
