FDA Warns Against Another Childhood Indulgence: Raw Cookie Dough
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning against eating raw cookie dough, not due to the risk of Salmonella in raw eggs but rather over concerns about E. coli in raw flour.
“It is very important that the FDA is educating consumers about this risk. For us at DO, health and safety of our customers is our top priority. So that is why we use a heat-treated flour. So it’s specifically manufactured for consumption. It’s a product by Ardent Mills. It eliminates that risk of any food-borne illness or potential harmful bacteria that can be found in flour,” DO NYC Founder Kristen Tomlan told the FOX Business Network’s Dagen McDowell.
Tomlan then weighed in on whether government agencies such as the FDA should be coming out with broad warnings like this.
“I think it’s important to educate people about the risks and I think if companies are taking the proper precautions then they shouldn’t be serving food that’s unsafe so we’ve definitely done exactly that and making sure the products we make are safe.”
Tomlan responded to concerns warnings such as this would turn away potential customers from businesses such as hers.
“I think there’s definitely a risk in people just turning a blind eye and not eating any cookie dough, but my message is cookie dough is not necessarily created equal, but you can still indulge in your favorite treat.”
