First Sunscreen, Now Baby Food—Jessica Alba's Honest Co. Under Fire
Jessica Alba’s billion-dollar brand—The Honest Company— has been hit with another lawsuit, claiming its “Organic Infant Formula” isn’t really organic.
The lawsuit filed by The Organic Consumers Association (OCA), a Minnesota-based non-profit advocacy organization that represents the views of approximately two million consumers in the U.S., says the company is not following the USDA’s organic regulations in its infant formula.
“The Honest Co. is falsely representing its Premium Infant Formula as ‘organic’ even though this product contains 11 synthetic substances prohibited under federal law in organic products. This is unacceptable,” Katherine Paul, associate director for OCA, tells FOXBusiness.com.
The product (pictured above) does carry a USDA organic seal of approval, which the OCA says violates federal law, the California Organic Products Act of 2003 and the Organic Food Production Act of 1990, which specifically states that synthetic ingredients are allowed in organic products if the ingredients are on the “National List.”
The Honest Co. adds ingredients like taurine, a synthetic additive that has been associated with negative brain and nervous system effects in animals; ascorbyl palmitate, which is a fat-soluble form of vitamin C; and beta-carotene to its infant formulas, which have been banned from the National List by the National Organic Standards Board.
But this isn’t the first time the brand has had been slapped with a lawsuit. Last summer, “Honest” consumers took to social media to show how their sunscreen was ineffective, leaving adults and children with severe sunburn. A class action lawsuit was later filed in September 2015, claiming a number of products contained “unnatural” and “synthetic” ingredients in addition to their “ineffective” sunscreen.
Earlier this year, another lawsuit was filed claiming the company “falsely” and “deceptively” labeled its cleaning products as natural when it contained toxic ingredients.
The Honest Company gave FOXBusiness.com the following statement via email.
"Our Organic Infant Formula is cleared by the Food and Drug Administration and meets all safety and nutritional standards. It is also certified USDA Organic by an independent third party, in strict accordance with the National Organic Program. We are confident this lawsuit will be dismissed."
