French Regulator Demands WhatsApp Modifies Data-Sharing Policy
The French data-protection regulator--the CNIL--on Monday ordered U.S. messaging service WhatsApp to modify its data-sharing agreement with parent company Facebook Inc. (FB)
WhatsApp has one month to comply with the demands or it may face sanctions for violating the French data protection act, the CNIL said in a statement.
The regulator said it considers transfer of user data--between WhatsApp and Facebook--illegal data collection.
The CNIL also said that WhatsApp had previously refused to hand over a sample of French user data, claiming that as a U.S. company it is only subject to U.S. regulation.
