RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook Will Do Android Apps, Too

Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) announced that its upcoming PlayBook tablet will support apps written for Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android mobile operating system in addition to supporting BlackBerry apps.RIM said it will launch what it calls "app players" that will be able to run BlackBerry Java apps and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) apps on the BlackBery PlayBook, which is scheduled to be released in the U.S. and Canada on April 19."The upcoming addition of BlackBerry Java and Android apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook on BlackBerry App World will provide our users with an even greater choice of apps and will also showcase the versatility of the platform" RIM Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said in a press release.On the technical side, developers will need to repackage their apps and submit them to the BlackBerry App World for them to be included, according to the release.A bit late to the tablet game, BlackBerry's PlayBook will feature a 1GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM and run on RIM's new BlackBerry Tablet OS. Unlike Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) popular iPad, the PlayBook will be capable of running Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE) Flash.The PlayBook will be released in four versions: WiFi-only, WiMax, LTE, and HSPA+.
