Washington Post Co.'s Name Changed to Graham Holdings

The Washington Post Co. (NYSE:WPO) has agreed to change its name to Graham Holdings effective Nov. 29.

The move comes as part of an earlier agreement reached with Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) CEO Jeff Bezos when he bought The Washington Post newspaper and certain other publishing assets in October. The Post itself will maintain its name.

With the new name, the D.C.-based media giant will adopt the ticker symbol “GHC.” Shares of The Washington Post Co. closed down 1.5% to $644.75 on Monday.

Bezos in October bought The Washington Post newspaper and certain other publishing assets – completely separately from Amazon – for $250 million. Those assets are now privately held.

Graham Holdings, which remains a publicly-traded entity, encompasses several different media and education businesses, including a number of small-city cable stations and Kaplan, which provides education services including test preparation.
