Mike Trout, Angels reach $430M contract extension, richest deal in sports history: Report
Superstar outfielder Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels are finalizing a 12-year, $430 million contract that shatters the previous record for the largest deal in the history of professional sports, according to a report Tuesday.
The deal would pay Trout an average annual salary of $36 million, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. Trout, 27, was set to become a free agent after the 2020 season.
Trout’s contract extension would easily surpass boxer Canelo Alvarez’s record-setting $365 million contract with streaming service DAZN. It would also break Major League Baseball’s previous record set by fellow slugger Bryce Harper, who signed a $330 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies earlier this offseason.
A 7-time All-Star selection, Trout has won two American League MVP awards and is widely considered to be baseball’s most complete player. He hit .312 with 39 home runs and 79 RBIs in 2018.
Trout has finished in the top-five among MLB players in wins-above-replacement, a figure used to measure a player’s contributions to a team relative to a statistically average player, in each of the last seven seasons.
Trout’s reported contract extension tops a list of record-setting paydays for MLB paydays this offseason. Harper’s $330 million deal broke the league’s previous record, established by Giancarlo Stanton’s $325 million contract extension while still a member of the Miami Marlins in 2014. Weeks earlier, slugger Manny Machado’s $300 million deal with the San Diego Padres briefly ranked as the largest contract ever signed by a free agent.
