2,000 WWI posters collected by soldier in French, US armies are up for sale at NYC auction

About 2,000 World War I posters collected by an American who served in both the French and U.S. armies during the conflict are up for auction.

The two-day online auction of the Col. Edward H. McCrahon collection of WWI posters was scheduled to start Tuesday at Guernsey's in Manhattan.

The Brooklyn-born McCrahon joined the French army in 1915, a year after the war started and two years before the U.S. joined the fight against Germany.

By the mid-1930s, McCrahon had compiled what was then considered the most extensive collection of WWI poster art produced by many of the nations involved in the war. The collection is owned by his grandchildren.

The items include four of the iconic "I Want You" U.S. Army recruitment posters featuring a pointing Uncle Sam. Those have an estimated sale price range of $3,000-$7,000.
