He rejoined the company in 1990 while pursuing an MBA. Later, he became a trainee in the sporting goods department. He rose up the ranks to head Sam's Club from 2006 to 2009. Then, McMillon led the international division before taking on the top spot in February 2014. McMillon worked at the home office in Bentonville, Ark. and overlapped with the late legendary founder Sam Walton by about a year.
FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH SAM WALTON: "My first Saturday morning meeting in January 1991, the buyers who were first training me had me present an item and Sam was running the meeting. So I got to stand next to him and show an item from our fishing department and talk about it."
THE SPEAKER ON THE WALL IN MCMILLON'S OFFICE. "Nobody uses the intercom any more, but Sam had a microphone on his desk. So if you wanted to talk to the home office, he would just turn it on and talk to the whole place. Today, we Tweet or do something else in replace of that. It's also a reminder of communication and how important communication was to him."
