AIDS drug taken before and after sex can help prevent HIV infection in gay men, study finds

A new study offers hope of another way to help prevent HIV infection in men at high risk of catching the AIDS virus.

Researchers say that uninfected men who took four doses of the drug Truvada (trew-VAH-duh) before and after having risky sex lowered their chances of catching the virus by 86 percent.

Health officials say that condoms and daily use of Truvada are still the best ways to prevent getting HIV, but welcomed news that another approach proved effective.

The study was discussed Tuesday at a medical conference in Seattle.
