Alibaba Soars but Markets Mostly Down

U.S. markets were mostly down on Friday, following the much anticipated Alibaba IPO (NYSE:BABA), which saw shares of the Chinese e-commerce giant jump over 38% in its first day of trading.  Markets had gained earlier after Scotland’s vote to remain part of the UK alleviated some volatility concerns, but slid lower in afternoon trading.

Crude Oil continued to slide for the third day to settle down $0.66 at $92.41 per barrel losing 0.71%.  Gold was also lower again today settling at $1,216.60 per ounce, down $10.30 or 0.84%.

Of the major benchmarks, only the  Dow Industrials (INDEXDJX:DJI) saw gains hitting a new record close of 17,280.06 gaining 14.07 points or 0.08%  The S&P 500 (INDEXSP:GSPC) which had jumped to a new intraday high slid in the afternoon and then rebounded before closing slightly lower at 2,010.40, down just under one point.

The NASDAQ Composite (NASDAQ:IXIC) dipped as well losing 13.64 points to close at 4,579,79 down 0.30% while the tech heavy NASDAQ 100 ended with a small loss of 2.99 points, down 0.07% to close at 4,100.09.

The Small cap Russell 2000 saw the most significant losses shedding just over one percent to close at 1,146.92 down 12.35 points.  The Fox gained some ground on the day rising 0.29% to close at 1,427.62 up 0.29%.
