Health Care Dominates U.S. News & World Report's 2016 '100 Best Jobs' List

U.S. News & World Report has released its 2016 list of the “100 Best Jobs” amid an improving labor market. Health care related jobs hold top spots on the list “due to a combination of high salaries, low unemployment rates and better work-life balance,” according to the report. Jobs in the health care sector also top the organization’s list of “Best Paying Jobs.”

The median salary for the overall 100 Best Jobs is $79,642, while the average unemployment rate is 2.5%.

Here is a look at the Top 5 on the Best Jobs list:

1. Orthodontist

This is the first year that orthodontist has made it to the number one spot on the Best Jobs list. It also ranked fifth on the Best Paying Jobs list.

2. Dentist

Dentist was bumped from number one on the Best Jobs list in 2016, a spot it had previously held for several years.

3. Computer Systems Analyst


The findings of this year’s report indicate that the technology sector is also rapidly growing. Computer Systems Analyst was also ranked number one on the list of Best Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) Jobs.

4. Nurse Anesthetist

Nurse anesthetists are registered nurses who specialize in anesthesiology. U.S. News Careers Editor Susannah Snider points out that demand for health care support occupations will grow as Baby Boomers age.

5. Physician Assistant

Another health care support occupation, physician assistants work under the supervision of doctors to conduct physical exams and treat patients, among other responsibilities. Snider notes these roles “are great opportunities for entry-level job seekers or those making a mid-career change.”
