Juneau sets record for most precipitation during January, with 11.29 inches and little snow
January is becoming something of rainy affair in Alaska's capital.
The amount of moisture set a record for the month of January, when 11.29 inches of precipitation fell at the city's airport, the Juneau Empire reported (http://is.gd/LIBDf7 ). That broke the previous record of 10.16 inches, set just last year.
Juneau typically receives 5.35 inches of precipitation, defined as a mixture of rain and melted snow, during a normal January, the National Climatic Data Center said.
While rain has been plentiful, there hasn't been much snow in Juneau this winter. In fact, the National Weather Service said the city has had 22.4 inches of powder this winter.
That's just below the record-low level of 24.4 inches of snow during the winter of 1987-88.
The average temperature this month has been 36.1 degrees, which officials say is 8 degrees warmer than normal.
Juneau has seen three of its 10 warmest January days since 1943, when the airport became the measuring point.
