NY and 4 other states sue subscriptions companies alleging inflated rates, unauthorized
New York has joined four other states in suing companies they say sell magazine and newspaper subscriptions at inflated prices and without the permission of the publishers.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says it's illegal in his state to trade on the name of reputable publications, use deceptive advertising and trick consumers into overpaying.
His office says it has joined the attorneys general of Oregon, Minnesota, Missouri and Texas in suing Orbital Publishing Group Inc. and interrelated New York and Oregon companies for mailing millions of unauthorized and allegedly misleading subscription notices to consumers nationwide.
The New York suit, filed Tuesday in state court in Manhattan, seeks to stop allegedly illegal practices and to return money to consumers.
A call to Orbital's lawyer was not immediately returned.
