Sealaska announces plans to log parcels on Prince of Wales Island, Cleveland Peninsula

Sealaska Corp. says it will log this year on two of the parcels it received in December through congressional action.

KCAW-radio reports (http://bit.ly/1Dp8mmu) federal legislation turned over 70,000 acres of Tongass National Forest to the Native regional corporation for southeast Alaska.

The company says it will log this year on parcels near north Election Creek on Prince of Wales Island and on the Cleveland Peninsula north of Ketchikan.

Together, the two parcels cover 3,400 acres of old-growth forest near land that Sealaska has already logged.

Most of the 70,000 acres turned over to Sealaska are on or near Prince of Wales Island.

Older forests make up more than half the acreage. Another one-third is growing back from previous cuts under Forest Service management.
