Toyota asks federal court to reduce the amount it was ordered to pay victims of fatal crash

Toyota Motor Corp. is asking a federal court to reduce the award it was ordered to pay plaintiffs who successfully sued in a fatal crash in St. Paul.

A jury determined Toyota was 60 percent to blame for the 2006 crash and that the victims should be paid about $11 million. In a motion filed in U.S. District Court, Toyota argued that the driver of the Toyota Camry, Koua Fong Lee, should be required to pay $4 million of the payout to the other plaintiffs. The jury found Lee was 40 percent responsible for the crash that killed three people and seriously injured two others.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press (http://bit.ly/1w0vkCi ) reports that Toyota says some victims received insurance payouts and that the amount it owes them should be reduced.
