Union makes proposal to Icahn that it says will save Taj

Atlantic City's main casino workers' union has made an offer to Trump Taj Mahal owner Carl Icahn that it says would keep the casino open for only slightly more than the billionaire investor's final contract proposal.

Local 54 of the Unite-HERE union said in a posting on its website Monday that its offer will cost only $1.3 million a year more than Icahn's last offer, before the strike began on July 1.

Icahn has said he will close the casino on Oct. 10.

The deal would have the casino pay for the same health benefits the other seven casinos offer as of Jan. 1, and would implement the terms of its contract with the Tropicana, which Icahn also owns, in September 2017.

Icahn did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
