Trump files for tax extension with IRS, White House says
President Donald Trump filed for an extension for his tax return, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday ahead of the deadline.
“The President filed an extension for his 2017 tax return, as do many Americans with complex returns,” Sanders said in a statement. “He will file his tax return by the extension deadline of October 15, 2018.”
U.S. taxpayers are obligated to file their federal tax forms by midnight on Tuesday. Americans can file for an extension with the Internal Revenue Service that pushes the deadline six months to Oct. 15, though taxpayers are asked to estimate their tax payment and submit that balance by Tuesday. Those who do not pay their estimated tax bill are subject to penalties.
The contents of Trump’s tax returns have been a subject of public debate since the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump has consistently declined to make his returns public, claiming that he is under audit.
The IRS website crashed earlier on Tuesday, knocking a direct pay service for last-minute tax filers out of service. IRS Commissioner David Kautter said taxpayers who are unable to make their payments because of the glitch will not be penalized, The Washington Post reported.
