Wasserman Schultz: GOP Mantra is to be an Obstacle in the Path of Progress

Democratic National Committee Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, (Fla.), weighed in on the 2016 presidential race Monday and the Republican Party’s chances of  winning.

“They have made Donald Trump all but the presumptive nominee and there is a lot of chaos and debate on whether he’s hijacked the Republican Party. This was six years in the making with the explosion of the Tea Party in 2010, and so they’ve made a bed and they are lying in it now.  It’s the responsibility of the Republican Party to own it,”  Wasserman Schultz told the FOX Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo.

Wasserman Schultz went on to dismiss claims by some that the mounting support of Donald Trump is a reaction to President Obama and his policies.

“Oh please, the Republicans have been in the majority in either the House or Senate since 2010 and they’ve declared from day one of his inauguration that they would make him a one-term president, that they would do everything they could to stop him.  So their mantra has been to be an obstacle in the path of progress and in spite of those obstacles we’ve added 20 million who now have health insurance, we’ve made 72 months of private sector job growth, cut the deficit.”

She then weighed in on concerns that Hillary Clinton has an advantage with superdelegates and the process has become unfair.

“Let’s be clear, superdelegates, unpledged delegates, don’t vote until the convention, so they are in no one’s pocket, and there have been many times, particularly in 2008 when they change their mind throughout the process. The purpose of superdelegates, which by the way have never been a determining factor in who our nominee is since they’ve been in place since 1984.”

Wasserman Schultz also shared her thoughts on the possibility of a Hillary Clinton indictment.

“There is an investigation, period. “ Schultz continued, “I thought she [Hillary Clinton] was right to say she is comfortable, 100% confident that there is no issue there and that she has been completely transparent and she handled the email process correctly and according to the letter of the law.”

She added, “She has released 55,000 pages of emails; This election is not about Hillary Clinton’s emails, her opponent Bernie Sanders has said that.  It’s about whether or not we are going to be able to help people who feel like they are not on the firmest ground right now, have more confidence and be able to make sure they can help their kids be better off and make sure they can make the middle class.”
