Chiefs' fans donate more than $300K to Buffalo children's hospital after victory over Bills

Kansas City Chiefs fans displayed true sportsmanship this week after nearly 16,000 people donated more than $312,000 to a children’s hospital in Buffalo, New York, following Sunday’s thrilling overtime victory over the Bills.

"Our team in the Patricia Allen Pediatric Recovery Wing thanks you for donating $312,800 from more than 15,800 donors! This team works hard caring for the kids in WNY & your donations help ensure they have all the tools needed to be ready to help," the Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo tweeted. 

The hospital first took to Twitter on the Monday following the game, thanking Chiefs fans for donating money in increments of $13 – an ode to the final 13 seconds of the game where Kansas City came back from a 3-point deficit to win a place in the AFC Championship Game. 

On Wednesday morning, the hospital said a total of $178,000 had been donated from the "Chiefs Kingdom" in just over 24 hours. 

"Thank you all! These donations help the ongoing need and ensure our team has the tools, training and programs to care for the kids in WNY," the hospital said in a tweet.

The money was donated to the Patricia Allen Fund, a fundraising effort that began last season after fans donated more than a million dollars to the hospital in honor of the passing of Josh Allen’s grandmother. 

"It’s certainly bittersweet with the game," vice president of the Children’s Hospital of Buffalo Foundation Andrew Bennett told The Buffalo News, "but the generosity of fans toward Josh is just absolutely remarkable. We’re incredibly grateful for this impactful support. It’s a great sign of sportsmanship and integrity, watching how fans have reacted to this. It’s another huge win for the kids that we’re helping out, day in and day out here in Western New York."
