Will Hurricane Matthew Stop Zika?
Large amounts of standing water from Hurricane Matthew is renewing concerns over contributing to the spread of Zika throughout Florida, but NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci says this will not be an issue.
Fauci told FBN’s Charles Payne on Cavuto: Coast to Coast that massive storms, such as Hurricane Matthew, blow away mosquitoes, larvae and nests.
“For a period of time, even though there’s more standing water around, which ultimately is a good breeding ground for the propagation of the mosquito populations, at least in the short term, you’re going to have a clearing out of the mosquitos,” he explained.
Nevertheless, Fauci says there are still fears over people infected with travel related Zika remaining in Florida.
“The concern is that when the mosquitos re-populate, we’ll see a return to where we were before the Hurricane,” he said.
