Ex-NFL player Robert Meachem’s money manager allegedly stole $1M from him

A Houston woman who once served as a financial manager for former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem allegedly stole more than $1 million from him, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

Tonya Lynn Adkism, 44, faces 16 counts of criminal activity, including mail fraud, bank fraud, wire fraud and identity theft, the Associated Press reported. Meachem hired Adkism in 2010.

Authorities allege that Adkism forged Meachem’s signature on checks to take money from his personal accounts, KHOU reported.

If convicted of all charges, Adkism faces more than 300 years in prison. A representative for Meachem declined the AP’s request for comment.

Meachem, 33, earned roughly $22.6 million during eight seasons in the NFL. A former first-round draft choice, Meachem played seven seasons for the Saints and one for the San Diego Chargers.

Meachem was sentenced to 30 days in jail in February 2017 after he failed to pay nearly $400,000 in alimony and child support. At the time, Meachem said that Adkism had stolen a large amount of money from him and left him unable to fulfil his obligations.
