Huntington Bank offers traditional banking products across several states, with nearly 1,000 branches and strong digital tools. While it provides comprehensive banking options, from basic checking to wealth management, you may find better savings product yields elsewhere through banks with more accessibility.

Fox Money rating: 7.6/10

Huntington Bank could be a good fit if you value in-person banking and live near a branch, but if you prioritize the highest savings rates or don't live in their service area, you'll want to look elsewhere.

Huntington Bank rates and products

Huntington offers traditional banking products, including checking, savings, and CDs, though availability and rates vary by location.

Checking account

  • Annual percentage yield (APY): Varies by location and account type
  • Minimum initial deposit: $0-$2,500
  • Monthly maintenance fee: $0-$25, depending on account type

Huntington offers four different checking accounts:

  • Asterisk-Free Checking: The basic, no-frills option. No minimum deposit or monthly maintenance fee makes it accessible for most customers. While it doesn't earn interest, you get free in-network ATM access and Huntington's 24-hour grace period for overdrafts.
  • Perks Checking: This account offers more features for a $10 monthly fee, which you can waive with $1,000 in monthly deposits. You'll earn interest (rates vary by location) and get five free out-of-network ATM withdrawals monthly.
  • Platinum Perks Checking: Unless you have $25,000 each month in your Total Relationship Balance with Huntington Bank, there’s a $25 monthly maintenance charge. You’ll earn interest on this account, and there’s no minimum amount required to get started.
  • SmartInvest Checking: This account caters to investment clients. There’s no minimum amount to open this account, and the interest you earn depends on your tier and Total Relationship Balance.

Pros

  • Multiple account options for different needs
  • No minimum deposit for a basic account
  • 24-hour overdraft grace period
  • Free in-network ATMs

Cons

  • Higher-tier accounts have steep balance requirements
  • Interest rates vary by location
  • Out-of-network ATM fees apply
  • Monthly fees unless requirements met

Savings account

  • APY: Up to 3.56% APY
  • Minimum initial deposit: $50 to $2,500 minimum deposit
  • Monthly maintenance fee: $0 to $10 monthly maintenance fee

Huntington offers two savings account options:

Premier Savings requires just $50 to open and charges no monthly fee with a $300 average daily balance or linked checking account. However, it offers a minimal 0.01% APY.

You’ll need $2,500 to open a Relationship Savings account, but you can earn up to 3.56% APY by pairing it with select checking accounts and maintaining higher balances. The $10 monthly fee can also be waived with a $2,500 average daily balance or a qualifying checking account.

The highest savings rate is for balances over $5,000 and one type of savings account. You can only get that if you open specific checking accounts alongside your savings accounts. Otherwise, you earn the bare minimum interest rate that you can get at other banks.

CDs

  • APY: 0.50 to 4.60%
  • Terms: Range from 1 month to 6 years
  • Minimum initial deposit: $1,000

All standard CDs earn the same APY regardless of term or balance, but you’ll need at least $1,000 to open your account. Huntington offers two promotional CD terms right now:

  • 5 months at 4.60% APY
  • 9 months at 3.56% APY

The bank also offers jumbo CDs. You’ll need at least $100,000 to open an account, and standard APY rates start at 0.50% APY, with terms ranging from 7 days to 5 years. There are two promotional terms for jumbo CDs:

  • 152 days at 4.60% APY
  • 270 days at 3.56% APY

CD rates vary by region, and you can only open one at a branch near you.

Other Huntington Bank products and services

Aside from checking, savings, and CDs, Huntington Bank offers many other types of banking options, including:

  • Money market accounts
  • Military banking options, including VA loans and small business loans
  • Student checking accounts for middle school, high school, and college students
  • Secured, cashback, and rewards credit cards
  • Mortgages, including FHA, VA, USDA, physician, and construction loans
  • home equity loans, and lines of credit
  • Auto loans, including refinancing
  • Personal loans
  • Investments, wealth management, and retirement planning
  • Home, auto, and life insurance
  • Business and commercial banking

If you live or work near a branch, you might want to take advantage of its other offers, especially if they meet your family's or business's different needs.

Huntington Bank digital experience and customer support

Online and mobile banking platform

Huntington shines in digital banking, ranking second among regional banks in J.D. Power's Mobile App Satisfaction Study. The app is rated 4.8/5 stars in both app stores, with users praising its intuitive interface and feature set. Android users note some transaction history issues, but the bank's responsive customer service addresses concerns quickly.

Customer service

Customer support options include:

  • Branch visits during business hours
  • Phone support: 1-800-480-2265 (7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET, daily)
  • AI chat assistance on their website
  • Mobile app support

While Huntington maintains an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), customer reviews on both BBB (1.1/5) and Trustpilot (1.7/5) highlight concerns about service quality and unexpected fees.

Account security

Checking and savings accounts, including CDs, are all FDIC-insured. That means if the bank files for bankruptcy, your money is protected up to $250,000 per depositor per account.

How Huntington Bank stacks up

Huntington Bank vs. Regions Bank

While both banks offer similar core products (checking, savings, credit cards, and mortgages), Huntington provides better physical accessibility with 970 branches compared to Regions' 667 locations.

Here's how their basic accounts compare:

  • Checking accounts: Both have similar structures, but Regions requires a $50 minimum opening deposit and may charge additional fees like online statement fees
  • Savings accounts: Both start at $50 minimum deposit, with maintenance fees that can be waived through balance requirements
  • CDs: Both offer competitive rates, especially for customers with existing relationships

The main difference? Huntington provides more locations and slightly more flexible fee-waiver requirements.

Huntington Bank vs. Fifth Third Bank

Fifth Third edges out Huntington in several areas:

  • Larger branch network (1,100+ locations vs. Huntington's 970)
  • More diverse savings products, including kids' savings and HSAs
  • Completely free checking option with no minimum deposit or balance requirements
  • Access to 40,000+ fee-free ATMs

However, Fifth Third's basic savings rate matches Huntington's minimal 0.01% APY. While Fifth Third offers more account varieties, you might find better interest rates at Huntington if you can maintain higher balances and qualify for relationship rates.

Is Huntington Bank right for you?

Huntington Bank might be right for you if:

  • You live near a branch and can open an account in person
  • You can meet the requirements to avoid the monthly fees
  • You want to keep all your banking in one place but don’t mind not earning the highest interest

You may want to look elsewhere if you:

  • Prioritize the highest available interest rates
  • Can’t meet the fee-waiver requirements
  • Live outside their service area

The bottom line

Huntington Bank offers a comprehensive suite of banking products and modern digital tools. While its rates may not match those of online competitors, and fees can be steep without qualifying balances, the convenience of branch access and full-service banking make it worth considering for those in its service area. Compare rates and fees carefully, particularly if you’re considering savings products or cannot maintain minimum balances.
