Bed Bath & Beyond's list of store closings

Bed Bath & Beyond is shuttering another 87 stores as its continues efforts to turn around its beleaguered business.

The new list of closures, which was updated on Jan. 30, includes all of its remaining Harmon Face Value stores. 

The move comes after sources told Reuters that the company was preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as soon as this week.

A spokesperson for Bed Bath & Beyond told FOX Business on Thursday that the company, which had been struggling to attract shoppers, has continued its analysis of its store footprint based on "a variety of factors" and has identified more store closures that will be implemented "in a timely manner."

"As we work with our advisors to consider multiple paths, we are implementing actions to manage our business as efficiently as possible," the spokesperson said.

This new list comes in addition to the 150 stores that the company said it was on track to close by the end of fiscal year 2022. 

During an earnings call last month, CEO Sue Gove noted that the 150 store closures, which the company first outlined in August 2022, would "further enable us to allocate resources according to customer demand."

In its latest earnings call on Jan. 10, the company reported that its sales slid 33% during the three-month period ending on Nov. 26. Sales at stores open at least a year, seen as a key gauge of a retailer’s health, fell by 32%.

The company said it initiated incremental cost reductions of approximately $80 million to $100 million, which included overhead expenses and headcount. The company said it also recognized another savings opportunity of $80 million to $100 million across the supply chain. 

Still, the retailer lost $393 million, or $4.33 per share in the quarter. That compares with a loss of $276.4 million, or $2.78 a year earlier. 

Gove blamed its quarterly performance on inventory constraints and reduced credit limits that resulted in shortages of merchandise on store shelves. It comes as no surprise given the company questioned last week whether it will be able to continue operating. 

The New Jersey-based retailer said that it’s looking at several options, including selling assets or restructuring its business in bankruptcy court. But even those efforts may not be successful. At the time, Gove said "there is substantial doubt about the company's ability to continue as a going concern."

Its stock, now trading in the $1 range, has lost nearly 90% of its value over the past 12 months.

In September, the company released a list of 56 stores that will close after first announcing a plan to turn around its business a month earlier, which included closing 150 of its namesake stores and cutting its workforce by 20%.
