San Francisco 49ers CEO: Super Bowl live broadcast still king despite streaming popularity

'TV is still where the vast majority of viewers watch [football games]'

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York said Wednesday that despite the different ways people can watch football games today, including the streaming platforms, traditional broadcast TV remains the go-to for most consumers.

SUPER BOWL LIV EXPECTED TO BE STAR-STUDDED WITH CELEBS

“TV is still where the vast majority of viewers watch,” York told FOX Business’ Maria Bartiromo. “And like anything, I think that's going to continue to change and evolve.”

But with the rise of services like Amazon making deals with the NFL to stream certain games during the season (and formerly Twitter), York said nothing beats experiencing live broadcast coverage and the “unbelievable elements” it brings.

“I don't think that that expertise is ever going to go away,” he said. "Those traditional companies are going to be there and there's going to continue to be enhancements … but I think TV still has a huge, huge role to play in broadcasting live sports, especially the NFL.”

York said with all the “noise” the Super Bowl brings and its production elements sometimes masking the actual sport, he is making sure the 49ers, who will play the Kansas City Chiefs in the big game on Sunday, are staying focused on the task at hand.

“This is much more of a made-for-TV show,” he said. “Trying to get our players to focus on blocking out all that noise and knowing that there’s still 60 minutes of football to play, it’s no different … you just have to get out there and get ready for playing the game.”
