Abigail Disney's tweet on Kobe Bryant sparks backlash

Disney’s comments were swiftly met with a social media backlash

The reaction to last weekend’s death of NBA superstar Kobe Bryant continues to be reported with a mix of praise for his accomplishments as well as criticism of his past.

Emmy-winning filmmaker Abigail Disney was among the latest people to weigh in on the former Los Angeles Lakers standout, tweeting in reference to a Washington Post opinion piece that mentioned a 2003 sexual assault allegation against Bryant.

Disney posted her comments Wednesday morning.

“I haven't said anything about Kobe so far because I felt some time needed to pass before weighing in. But yes, it's time for the sledgehammer to come out. The man was a rapist. Deal with it.”

Bryant denied the rape charges, but admitted to cheating on his wife and reportedly settled a civil suit.

“This is unfair and not ok,” one commenter wrote. “Feel how you will about him but his wife lost her husband, his daughters lost their father. If you must go down this road, educate yourself fully on that situation first, you just may feel a bit differently.”

Disney's grandfather, Roy O. Disney, co-founded The Walt Disney Company.

Disney has spoken about being a survivor of sexual assault herself and in the past has expressed how furious she was about hearing #MeToo allegations against former film producer Harvey Weinstein, according to the Daily Mail.
